Mooresville, NC (Sept.
8, 2009) -
Stemming from another driver's woes, Justin Lloyd's race was
cut short of the scheduled 200 laps last Friday night. Making only his
second career start in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, Justin Lloyd and the No.
15 team unloaded at Toledo hoping to expand on what they had learned
earlier in the year at Berlin Speedway and come home with a solid
finish.
Struggling
to grasp the handling at the beginning of practice, Lloyd and the team
made several changes and hit on something near the end of the session,
putting them sixth on the speed chart. With a few more changes before
qualifying, Lloyd was able to post a time good enough for the 10th
starting spot.
"Going into the race, I really had the same game plan I did at
Berlin," Lloyd said. "I just wanted to keep the fenders on the
car, learn as much as I could and be around at the end of the day."
The young driver did just that, staying within the top 15 for the first
half of the race. Trying to find a better line to get him to the front,
Justin drove up behind the No. 52 of Ken Schrader and followed in the
veteran driver's tracks for several circuits to learn whatever he could.
The move paid off, and Lloyd felt like he found a better line that could
get him to the front of the field.
With about 50 laps remaining, Lloyd was sitting well within the top six and was patiently waiting for the laps to wind down. Going into the
corner, Parker Kligerman drove his No. 77 to deep into the corner behind
Lloyd and lost control of his racecar, sending it into the
No. 15. The incident put Lloyd into the wall, effectively ending his
night. The Venturini Motorsports team settled for a 22nd place finish.
"It's unfortunate that the night had to end so early, but there was
nothing I could really do about it," Lloyd said. "I was
running my line into the corner and just got hit from behind. We were
really having a good run and I was just patiently working my way towards
the front. But I'll just take what we learned here and get ready for
Rockingham."
Justin Lloyd's next event in the No. 15 Venturini Motorsports entry will
be at Rockingham Speedway on October 11th. The Carolina 200 will be
shown on SPEED Channel at 10 PM EST on Sunday night.
