With today's economy it tough finding sponsorship at every level of auto racing. After an exciting entry and exceptional performance by Justin Lloyd in the ARCA RE/MAX series last season, Lloyd has spent the past 7 months looking for that elusive major sponsor to carry him through the 2010 racing season. Lloyd says, "It's tough out there right now; even the top level NASCAR teams are finding it very difficult to obtain sponsorship. So, I decided to earn funding for my racing by taking a shot at the U.S. Legends $1 Million purse.
With winner payouts for Legend car feature races typically ranging from a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars at a national event, the $250,000 that will go to the Legends Million victor is truly an unprecedented prize. Racers who finish in positions two through five will earn a record $100,000, $50,000, $25,000 and $20,000 respectively.
With high hopes of victory Lloyd has been honing his skills the past 5 weeks in the Pro Division at Charlotte Motor Speedway's Summer Shootout. With a very strong showing, Lloyd is going into the Legends Million race with confidence that his #15 Chris Rogers Motorsports race car has what it takes to bring home a win. "All I need is a top three finish for the funding needed to run another ARCA race this season. 1st place would give us three or four races in the ARCA RE/MAX series, but I'm just hoping for the funding for one more race." said Lloyd.
The Legends Million will include Legend Car Series regulars, up-and-coming drivers and the sport's top stars from NASCAR. To date, drivers from 28 U.S. states and Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom are entered in this first-of-its-kind event.
"The last-place finisher in the Legends Million A-Feature will walk away with $10,000, which is ten times what many Legend Car races pay the feature winner," said Don Hawk, vice president of business affairs for Speedway Motorsports Inc.
SPEED TV will televise the Legends Million race Saturday, July 17, from 8 p.m. Eastern to 11 p.m. Eastern. The program will include live coverage of the Legends Million A-Feature and taped highlights from all the action on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
